On July 17, 2008, Monica Murguia and Ashley Rufino went to their sister’s apartment in Greeley, Colorado. Upon entering the apartment, they saw a bloodied blanket on the living room floor. When they approached the blanket, they would see their sister was underneath, beaten so terribly that her face was disfigured and her skull was crushed in. They immediately called 911, but were so distraught by what they had just witnessed that a neighbor had to continue the phone call herself and take Monica and Ashley outside. She told the 911 operator there was nothing they could do to save her, as she was already stiff and she felt no pulse. When the paramedics arrived, they too knew she was far past aid.
