In episode 5, we discussed Chanel Miller and the Stanford rape case. In that episode, we provided information regarding Title IX and what Stanford’s Title IX office and regulations entailed. As of just a few days ago, Title IX has become big news again, because Betsy DeVos, The United States Secretary of Education has decided to completely overhaul these federal regulations, which will now make it more difficult to seek justice if you are sexually harassed or abused during your college experience.
Title IX was enacted in 1972 under the Education Amendments Act, and it is a federal law that states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." So, any public or private education institution that receives federal funding must abide by the rules and regulations of Title IX.
